The country operates at the date of May 2004 156 700km ² of protected area, which represents approximately 4.95% of the total area. There are several levels of prtection, the greater protection of the parks and the smallest villages Forests. Rightly, to protect biodiversity, 88 national parks and 490 sanctuaries have been established, covering an area of 153 000 km ².

Curiously, many national parks owe their existence to hunting. Indeed, in past centuries, and Maharajahs Mongol emperors possessed vast land around their palace where they practiced their favorite sport. With the arrival of English, it was fashionable for Maharajahs to invite the British dignitaries to large parts of hunting. Thousands of animals were then masacre.

If this era made India pay a heavy price because of the scarcity of many beautiful species, paradoxically thanks to the hunting areas that were preserved many sites wild thereafter became shrines
